What is Hoop Dance?
- Hoop Dance is an ever-evolving art and fitness practice. As a whole, Hoop Dance is a blend of dancing with “hula hooping”. The hoop travels up, down and off the body to create an athletic and expressive modern dance form. In the last 17 years we have seen some distinct styles emerge within the greater genre of hoop dance. On our DVD you will learn the foundational moves of Hoop Dance: hooping on the core, aka “Body Rocking”.
- Body Rocking: characterized by hooping mostly on the body with a big emphasize on full freedom of body movement and dance expression.
- Off-Body: Anything in the hand is considered “Off-Body”. Most of the “tricks” of hoop dance are Off-Body.
- Your hoop style will be greatly affected by the size and weight of your hoop. The lighter and smaller hoops lend themselves to more Off-Body and the slightly heavier and larger hoops tend to be better for Body-Rocking. However, by sizing down slowly you can BodyRock with a smaller hoop and have the best of both worlds :) For more information on choosing the right hoop size, visit our Hoop Size page.
Will I be able to hoop?
Hooping is a highly accessible activity. Many people pick it up right away, but most experience some time of challenge in the very beginning. Not to worry, if you stick through this integration period, you will get to the sweet joy of hoop dance eventually. Just stick with it!

What's all this about the "Hooping Community"?
Hooping at first seems like a solitary sport, and for many it is. However, there is much to be gained by sharing your love of hoop dance with others. In community we can encourage each other, share our experience and just purely enjoy the company of others who are mad for hooping like we are! Try searching online on websites like Hooping.org, Hoopcity.ca and Facebook.com to see if there's already a hooping community in your area. If there isn't, it is easy to start a hoop craze. Just go to a public place like a park once a week and practice. Bring extra hoops! Sooner or later people will want to try too. If you stick with it and even advertise your hoop jam with flyers, before you know it you will have a group of hoopers to spin with!

HOOP PRACTICE FAQ:
Is Hooping safe?
Physically, hooping can be low to medium impact, depending on your skill level and the types of moves you engage in. You can expect some bruising especially when you first starting or hooping over a new area. Like any physical activity you may occasionally bonk yourself in the nose or shin or possibly even pull a muscle. Warming up and stretching properly will help prevent such sports related injuries. As with any new exercise, always consult your physician before beginning your hoop journey!
How often and for how long should I hoop?
When you are first learning to hoop it is ideal to establish a daily practice. Even if you only hoop for 10 minutes (after warming up, of course). The Hoop Practice sections on our DVD will help guide you. Daily practice will help you get into the flow of hooping quickly and you will begin to enjoy the many benefits almost immediately! Once you have established the habit, hooping 3 days a week for at least 40 minutes will keep you blissfully flowing forward on your hoop journey! Increase your frequency of hooping if weight loss is a top priority.
How can I minimize bruising and soreness?
As mentioned, in the beginning most people will experience some bruising. Try to keep the hoop from riding too long on your hipbones. Instead hoop above or just below. If you do get some bruising, take a day off, take some homeopathic arnica and rub some arnica gel on the bruises (available at your local health food store). Over time your body will get used to hooping, and you’ll learn how to avoid the boniest parts of your body. You may also experience some muscle soreness as your body responds to the new challenge of hooping. Be sure you warm up properly before and stretch after you hoop!
How long does it take to learn and “see results”?
Everyone has a different path with the hoop. For some hooping will come easy and fast and for others it will take longer and be more challenging. There is no right or wrong to hoop dance. Anah stayed on her waist for over two years when she started! She didn’t have any other examples of hooping around her so she just blissfully danced, twirled and flowed with it. If you are hooping for fitness, you should see some results within 30 days if you combine your hoop practice with a healthy diet. We recommend hooping to high energy music that gets you excited if one of your goals is to lose weight. Otherwise just have fun with it and any fitness benefits will just be icing on the cake!
How come I feel so awkward and some of the moves seem so hard at first?
Any new movement or skill will have a natural evolution. At first it may seem impossible and takes courage to even attempt. Then you get it maybe once or twice, but with perhaps some awkwardness and ego bruising. If you keep at it you will be able to get the move every time with effort. The next evolution will be getting the move every time with ease. If you continue working on it past this point, you will find yourself dancing through the movement with grace and flow! If you are prepared for this evolution beforehand and try to have patience with yourself, you will be more likely to enjoy the process and make it all the way through the cycle to true hoop DANCE without giving up.

How can setting an intention help my practice?
To get the most out of your hoop practice it is good to know your goals. Then you can positively visualize yourself arriving to your intention with joy.
What should I wear?
Your clothing will begin to take on a new importance when you start hoop dancing! You will need to make choices now not only for fashion but for grip, breath-ability, and stretch. Natural, textured fibers work best, and a tight fit with little to no hanging pieces will help your hoop grip to you with no impediments. Wear comfortable athletic shoes to protect your feet.
Where should I hoop? Prepare your hoop space. You should clear a space of 10 x 10 if possible and remove any obstacles. A smooth floor works best, but many love to hoop on grass or carpet as well. Be sure you have water handy, a towel for sweat and plenty of music to choose from!

Which tubing and hoop size is right for me?
- 3/4 tubing: 33 - 35 inch; excellent for beginning to advanced off-body hooping, advanced BodyRockers, fast core hooping, sustained spinning, petite hoopers and kids.
- 7/8 tubing: 38 inch; Good for petite or athletic beginners, those that want to try a lighter hoop but are still learning the foundational movements of hoop dance, and body rockers!
- 7/8 tubing: 40 inch; Good for most beginners, heavier hoopers, body rockers or those that specifically want to lose weight (use it off body for buff arms!).
Why don’t you tape your EcoHoops?
We love tape and boy has it been hard to let go of! However, our commitment is to our eco-friendly practices first. The truth is, tape is not necessary. It adds additional waste and can off gas toxic chemicals and/or use toxic adhesives. For more info, click here.
How long will my hoop last?
With a little TLC, your EcoHoop will last a lifetime. Similar to a skateboard or any other interactive toy you can expect some external wear and tear over time. The EcoHoop can be cleaned with a wet cloth and mild soap. If it’s time to lay your EcoHoop to rest, see “How can I recycle my hoop” below! If the sanded portion on your hoop smooths out, just re-sand with some 80 grit sandpaper, and voila! Your grip will return :)
How can I recycle my EcoHoop?
If your hoop ever gets irreparably damaged it can be recycled through most residential recycling programs. It is made from #2 plastic, so you should be able to just include it in your recyclables bin. Check with your local waste management provider if you have any questions about what types of materials you can place in your bin.
Can I coil this hoop all the way down for travel?
While theoretically you could coil it down for travel, I don't recommend coiling ANY hoop down. You always run the risk of kinking and you put wear and tear on the connecter which can cause "wiggle" over time. The best thing, if you have to go on an airplane, is to coil it part way (the way it is when you take it out of the package) and secure it with a little tape in three places. You could also coil two together which makes a slightly larger coil and is less stressful on the plastic and the joint.
